Where Plug-In Hybrid Conversions (mostly Priuses) Are

NOTE: We're no longer adding to this page. Here's why:

Starting with CalCars' first "proof-of-concept" conversion in 2004, we at CalCars kept an informal accounting of the individuals and institutions who took the pioneering step of having one or more of their hybrid cars converted into a plug-in hybrid.

In the closing months of 2009, after more than five years and over 150 hybrid-to-PHEV conversions (of the 750+ we know of) were brought to our attention and documented below, we will no longer be updating the list or map. That is because we have essentially "achieved victory." We have successfully completed our initial mission (to put PHEVs "on the map" and to encourage and pursuade carmakers to mass produce them). We are now shifting our focus to our next mission of converting existing vehicles to PHEVs.

An "official" declaration of victory was announced by Felix Kramer at the Business of Plugging In Conference in Detroit in October 2009; an mp3 audio download or pdf transcript of his full remarks are available. In the talk and associated presentation, the rationale and outline of our second mission is provided. See also our "ICE conversions" page for additional details. And look for an eventual page analogous to this, but for ICE-PHEV conversions.

Below is a chronology of hybrid Toyota Priuses and Ford Escapes that have been converted. Unless otherwise noted, all are Prius. If you're interested in converting your Prius, see the information at How To Get a Plug-In Hybrid.

Some of these vehicles may be available for demonstrations using the available contact info. Click on images of cars 1, 6-8, or 10-12 for high-resolution images (media may use with credit: CalCars.org). In addition, see the EAA-PHEV list, which sometimes gets ahead of this list.

You can see a general overview of PHEVs at All About Plug-In Hybrids (that page needs an update!). Vehicles converted by Professor Andy Frank and his team at the UC Davis Hybrid Center are listed at our History of PHEVs page, with further info at www.team-fate.net. At the bottom of this page, we've begun a list of PHEV Schoolbuses.

We're not adding to the list, but if you have corrections, please send them to: webmaster@calcars.org.
